Faecal sludge matter contains traces of the COVID-19 virus, enough to infect someone who comes in contact with it. Sanitation workers in India have been working without any protective equipment for years, they are exceptionally vulnerable to the virus not only because of their profession, but also because of their caste. The article focuses on the worsening condition of sanitation workers, who primarily belong from the Dalit caste group in India. It highlights worker conditions during the pandemic through examples across various states in India.
